  • You Too Can DIY uPVC Windows. Ask Frank.

Posted on March 8th, 2010 No comments

I called in to see my old friend Frank last week and found him admiring his new uPVC windows.  They looked really well and I told him so.  I also asked him who did the job for him, as I was considering getting some windows installed myself.  ‘I did them myself’, he laughed.

I was very impressed that Frank was able to DIY uPVC windows.  ‘Was it difficult?’ I asked.   He said that it was not the easiest project he had ever undertaken, but as he had done some home improvement work before, he had decided to have a go at it.  He said that the most important thing to do was to plan properly.

‘I was fairly sure that  did not need planning permission, but I did check with the local planning office anyway, just to be sure’, he said.  ‘Then I went online to research how to DIY uPVC windows.  There are good sites out there like http://upvcwindowsguide.com that have articles on all aspects of uPVC windows’.  He went on to say that he had to pick a style of window that suited the house and he took his time to make sure that he picked the right type.

He actually bought his windows online from a supplier that gave a very good deal on shipping costs.  ‘Be careful though’, he said. ’Shipping costs for heavy items like windows could be high and you might end up being better of purchasing from a local supplier’.

When he started to install his DIY uPVC windows he kept his laptop close to hand and he was able to get answers to any problems he came up against online.  ‘The window supplier was a great help to me’, he said. ‘ He gave me excellent instructions on how to install the windows and it worked out great’.

I had to admit he was right, the job did look really well.  And will I DIY uPVC windows in my own house?  Well, I am thinking about that!

  • Choosing the Right Carport Building Plans

Posted on March 2nd, 2010 No comments

There are many things to consider when installing or building a carport. It is highly important that you make all of the right carport building plans before you ever begin the building process. Most consumers choose from the many types and options in prefabricated kits because they are much easier to assemble and install. However, even with a kit installation, there are a few things that you will need to take care of before and after the installation is complete. If you stay focused on the primary steps, the installation should go smoothly even if you plan on building your carport from scratch or with your own materials.

The first step in planning a carport is the permit process. Some places require permits for building carports while others have no restrictions at all. It is important to follow and meet all of the local building codes in order to adequately and successfully install a shelter. Once you have all of the right paperwork filled out you can begin the purchase process. Some local governments require that you submit carport building plans prior to installation. If you already have the supplies and plans, this process is easy. However, if you don’t already have the plan on hand, you will need to get a copy from the manufacturing company or dealer. Once the plans have been accepted you can make your purchase with no worries.

Prior to installation you will need to prepare the building site to make sure that you have a flat level surface to start with. Most manufacturers recommend that you install a carport foundation made of concrete or cement prior to installation because the shelter will need to be anchored down for your safety reasons. Once the cement is cured, you can begin installation according to the instructions or steps recommended by the manufacturer. Once the shelter is in place you will need to secure it to the ground. Anchors usually come with a shelter kit but if they don’t, you should have no problem finding an anchoring kit at your local home improvement or hardware store.

  • Solar Pool Covers For Pool Owners

Posted on March 2nd, 2010 No comments

Have you ever wondered why going swimming at the hotel pool or other commercial pools is so much more enjoyable than you own?  One possible answer to this question is that it is heated or at a controlled temperature.  Controlling the temperature of your pool can really make your swimming experience more enjoyable.  Many of the pools at hotels and the like are indoor heated pools.  They have probably spent small fortunes making sure that their pool is at the right temperature for their patrons.  So what is the everyday pool owner to do to get similar results?  The answer is a very simple one.

Solar pool covers allow the every day pool owner to keep their pool at a reasonable temperature with out spending a ton of money on heating equipment or from buying an indoor pool.  A solar cover uses the sun’s energy to heat your pool.  In my opinion it is the easiest and least expensive way to heat your pool.  Just by adding a simple extra touch like a solar pool cover you could take your pool to the next level.  If you when through the riggers of buying a pool, you might as well do everything you can to enjoy it.  By using a solar pool cover, you will get way more use out of your pool.  You will be able to go swimming not just when it is scorching hot outside but on average nice days as well.

One added bonus of a solar cover over a conventional heating system is energy conservation.  If environmental health is an important issue to you than a solar cover will give you the pleasure of heating your pool without the guilt of increasing your carbon footprint. Since, solar pool covers use the sun’s energy to heat your pool, you can be confident that you are using an energy efficient and environmentally friendly heating option.

  • Enhance Your Home with Travertine Tiles

Posted on February 24th, 2010 No comments

If you are on a strictly limited budget then you don’t have much choice in flooring. You have to go for cheap and cheerful option and travertine is certainly not the choice for you. But if money is not a problem or you are willing in invest in enhancing your home, then it is well worth considering some of the more expensive natural stone finishes that are very popular these days such as travertine marble tiles.

The good thing about travertine floor tile is it always gives your home the look of luxury. No matter what kind of travertine tiles you buy, visitors will detect a look of quality and will enjoy your beautiful floor. And if you ever sell your home, your floor will be an asset too because it will not wear out like a carpet which looks old virtually from a few months after it is installed. It also does not date like hardwood flooring where fashions change from light wood to dark wood and from wide plank to narrow plank and back again on a seemingly annual basis.

The most important issue about such an investment is that you have to be sure about the choice you are making. If you choose the country look tumbled travertine then you need to have the country look room or home to go with it, and it is not an easy (or cheap) job to change your mind in a year or two and decide that actually you would prefer the highly polished sophisticated town look.

As far as color choices are concerned, all travertine tiles come in neutral colors, which means that you can change your decor without changing your flooring. However, you will find that there are the warmer beige type neutral shades in travertine as well as cooler ivory tones so you need to be sure that you are happy with the color grouping you choose when you select your flooring.

  • White Oak Laminated Flooring

Posted on February 17th, 2010 No comments

Oak laminate floors are the top choice of flooring for home décor types. The main attraction here is floors made from oak laminate, although some prefer white, dark or honey oak. All four are appealing to the fashion sense in you and most others. Despite the fact that they are not always available, Wal-Mart and/or Home Depot has them. Overall, you would spend about $40 to $300 per piece (depending on texture and color). The Internet has cheaper ones as well. Begin your search by inputting the key words “oak laminate floors.” It is best that you look and compare the shipping rates before buying. Furthermore, check for the materials’ sturdiness. In a matter of hours, your old flooring will be a thing of the past.

  • Choosing Chandelier Lighting

Posted on February 16th, 2010 No comments

When it comes to selecting lighting for your home, a chandelier is probably not the first thing that comes to mind. In fact, when most people think of chandelier lighting, they automatically picture delicate crystal chandeliers, though these aren’t the only type available. Selecting the perfect chandelier for your home is all about considering the different styles. Fortunately, there are fixtures available to suit just about any style of decor, so you’re likely to find one that works well in your home. There are even styles available that are well suited to a more masculine decor style. The following article will summarize some of the most common types of chandeliers lighting, so that you can spend your time choosing the best one for your situation.

The Contemporary Chandelier – This type of chandelier is becoming increasingly popular, as it combines the traditional hanging design with a more updated appearance. Using chandelier lighting in an entryway or even over a dining room table can be a great way to provide soft, but direct lighting on the area below, particularly when using chandelier lamp shades. Some examples of contemporary fixtures include those with cylindrical and chrome star-pattern designs.

Victorian Chandeliers – Although these fixtures work particularly well in a Victorian style home, they can also be used to provide a dramatic appearance in just about any home. A Victorian fixture can be particularly effective when placed over a piano or a formal dining room.

The Rustic Chandelier – These fixtures work particularly well in a more rugged or masculine space, such as a cabin or lodge. A fixture adorned with antlers can be the perfect design element in a hunter’s cabin or themed room.

When shopping for chandeliers, it’s a good idea to bring along some photos of your room in order to provide some reference for your decision. Even if you’re shopping online, it’s good to have a general feel for the room you’re looking to enhance, and a few photos can go a long way toward helping you make the right decision.

  • History of The Pendulum Clock

Posted on February 10th, 2010 No comments

The pendulum clock is a unique time piece that tells the time by swinging a mechanical body back and forth from 10 to 15 degrees. Pendulum clocks go all the way back to the 1600’s and was man’s great invention on telling time accurately. The basics of this clock is a face, a weight, a keyhole and the pendulum.

The clock is controlled by gears hidden in the clock which move the hands  with every swing of the pendulum. There is an obvious disparity in sophistication when you compare the pendulum clock to a modern quartz model, but pendulum clocks have a great and long history. A German man named Peter Henlein experimented with ways to tell the time accurately. His goal was to develop an instrument that everyone could use that would serve as a standard for time. Henlein’s experiments lead to his invention of a clock that is very similar to the pendulum wall clock of today, but it failed to accurately tell the time.

    Pendulum Wall Clock

A big problem with his invention was that it only hand an hour hand and posed problems for those wanting to know half hours. His work was improved upon by Christian Huygens and he is the one credited with the invention of the pendulum clock. Several years after his invention he added a minute hand and thus gave his time piece much more accuracy.

His great success is no surprise as he was a mathematician who was adamant about being accurate and precise. His device has been improved upon over the years by anonymous inventors and technologists. A big improvement on his device was to make it swing a little less.

Pendulum clocks have the longest history and it is terrific that this time keeping device is still a popular choice for home remodelers and decorators.

  • Benefits of Wood Patio Covers

Posted on January 27th, 2010 No comments

There are many benefits of wood, especially if you love wood.  If you are only interested in the quickest and least maintenance possible, then wood is not for you.  Let’s just get that out into the open right off the bat.  If you are looking for a timeless and handsome patio cover, then you should consider wood patio covers first and foremost.  There are so many options available with this material.  Additionally, because of the skilled labor pool, most contractors and carpenters will know wood the best.  It is usually the least expensive option and requires less time and additional materials for construction.

You can achieve an elegant look with the warm hues and simplicity that wood affords.  Your patio will be framed like a beautiful painting when you use wood.  Many homeowners will go with a cedar or redwood choice as these are the most workable and weather resistant woods.  In this case, wood sealants are recommended for even longer term life of the wood, but both cedar and redwood age very gracefully to a nice muted grayish hue.  Gentle curves in beam and lattice pieces can be added or more linear angles can be opted for.  Wood patio covers are great for creating a very handsome look.  They are timeless and elegant.

One thing that is often not mentioned when it comes to wood is maintenance issues.  While they are gorgeous and deserve every accolade, they can also take time to maintain.  It’s like what your dentist would say to you.  You only have to maintain the teeth you want to keep.  You only have to maintain your wood members that you want to last.  There are inevitable factors of water and weather that will take their toll on your structure.  With proper care, this is not really a problem to worry about.

Another point to think about is this, what if you want to change the look of your patio?  You can accomplish this by adding some new blinds, awnings or shades to your wooden posts or beams.  This is as simple as screwing them on.  Want a new swing to hang from the beam?  No problem, just drill the required holes and add the proper hardware.  This is a little bit more difficult when we talk about patio cover kits or metal and vinyl structures.  Plus, you can simply sand down your old sealer or stain color and opt for a completely new color the next time around.  This is definitely a lot of work, but probably less than getting a new one.  Just some of the many benefits of wood patio covers to think about.
