  • Saddle Fitting Pointers

Posted on June 21st, 2010 No comments

Riding horseback is a joyful, exhilarating experience where rider and horse become one entity, working together in harmony. Some people enjoy riding bareback but the majority of riders prefer to use a saddle. Using the proper sized saddle is crucial to making your ride not only comfortable for you and your equine friend but safe, too.

Some people think that English and Western saddles are interchangeable but this thinking is incorrect. Each type of saddle is sized differently and therefore the correct measurements must be used. English saddles should be measured from the middle of the cantle on the back of the saddle to the pummel side, stopping at the brad nail which is near the front of the saddle. The thigh is what is being measured here, not the size of your rear. Western saddles should be measured from the pommel base in a straight line to the back of the cantle.

Measuring each type of saddle correctly ensures that you are using your energy and that of your mount the most efficiently. The better the fit of the saddle, the better your seat, and the less energy you have to spend staying in the saddle. Your horse doesn’t have to expend as much energy on being able to move in a well balanced stride if your seating is stable. This is especially important when moving at high speeds such as when racing, jumping or barrel racing when balance is incredibly important for maximum performance.

Saddle fitting is not rocket science and doesn’t have to be difficult or time consuming. Following the simple rules outlined above will help in finding the correct size saddle and allow you to ride with confidence and comfort, whether show jumping, roping cattle, or out on a leisurely trail ride. Happy trails to you! Learn more about Bates dressage saddle or Circle Y saddle.

  • Getting an Insurance Policy for Pet Birds

    Posted on May 28th, 2010 1 comment

Acquiring insurance for birds can be more difficult as compared with other pets. This is partly because of the fact that there is a wide array of bird breeds and species kept as pets. Luckily, there are many pet insurance providers that now offer general coverage policies, like medical expenses for illness or injury of pet birds. Most companies, however, limit their insurance coverage on pet birds. With these feathered pets, the accessibility of insurance coverage for matters like third-party liability is quite rare.

In getting the right pet insurance for your bird, it is important to research first on the type of medical needs that your pet will likely to have. As you cannot predict future injuries or health conditions, you can still learn about the hereditary conditions that will possibly affect the breed of your pet.

It is then wise to choose an exotic insurance policy for your bird. A number of pet insurance providers do not offer coverage for particular species of birds. However, they may still be able to provide you their exotic pet policy. To help you in choosing the best pet insurance for birds, it is highly recommended to get quotes from different insurance providers for effective comparison. Moreover, be wary of the applicable insurance plans that would suit the type of bird that you have. Good thing, there are now a number of recognized insurance companies, like the Veterinary Pet Insurance, that provide immediate policy quotes in the Internet.

It is advisable to select an affordable coverage from an insurance company that is certified in your state. Information regarding the licenses must be clearly posted on the company’s website. If not, it may be obtained from the insurance licensing agency on your state. Once you have chosen the ideal pet insurance for birds, call the insurance company to purchase the plan or go online to pay for it.

Meanwhile, if you have limited veterinary options in your area, it is critical to ascertain that the policy that you will get will cover medical expenses incurred from pet hospitals situated in other locations, while giving you the freedom to choose any vet of your choice.

  • Acancocha Water Frog

Posted on May 10th, 2010 No comments

The Acancocha Water Frog is on the endangered list of species making this species one of the hardest frogs to find. They were classified as endangered as of 2004. This is because there are only so many of these types of frogs that can be found, and they need to increase the population before they cannot find anymore. They are part of the amphibian group, classifying them in the same group as mudpuppies and lizards. They were listed as endangered in Peru, since this is where the species is most commonly found living.

When thinking about why rare animals are decreasing in numbers as we go along, taking out the population of the specific species then there is much to take into consideration. This is because of the habitat they might live in, or because of a higher population of animals that are a threat to their lively hood. This endangered frog’s scientific name might be hard to say, but it is good to know in case you come across one, Telmatobius jelskii. It might seem like a mouthful, but the scientists classify this species by the unique name it is given, just like all others.

  • Potty Training Your Puppy

Posted on March 9th, 2010 No comments

Some breeds of dog have notoriously high energy levels, which makes them difficult to train. These mischievous little imps think it’s great fun testing the patience of their owner. Pooing and weeing in all the wrong places is just part of the fun.

But don’t let them get away with it.

Puppies need proper training and firm handling in order for them to grow up into beautifully behaved dogs.

And while regular exercise is a must for boisterous young dogs, potty training a puppy is every bit as important as potty training a baby.

Puppies who have not been properly trained will do whatever they fancy inside the house… and we don’t just mean jumping on and over the furniture.

In recent years, training pads for puppies have become more and more widely used…they are a modern day phenomenon.

After the initial period of teaching the basics, and assuming the puppy-potty training schedule has been successful, it is essential to concentrate on a healthy mix of mental and physical stimulation.

Having got the hang of where he is supposed to answer the call of nature, the little chappie will need plenty of exercise to keep him healthy.

As well as physical exercise, what’s inside that woolly little head will also need stimulation. Otherwise, he will get bored. And what does a bored puppy do?

Right first time… he gets into mischief.

Experts advise owners to keep an adequate supply of strong, chewy toys on hand. Otherwise, hide those Jimmy Choos and that very expensive collection of designer handbags.

Watch out for the leather furniture too. And wooden doors, and table legs and children’s toys… and just about everything else within reach of sharp little teeth.

    So there we have it.

Thanks to your excellent training and perseverance, there should be no more worries about chewing and pooing in all the wrong places.

With proper puppy training, the right amount of exercise and a healthy, nutritious diet the boisterous young puppy should develop into a fine figure of a dog, an ideal companion for all the family.

Full of love, licks and loyalty.

  • Are You Looking To Purchase A Dog Kennel?

Posted on February 20th, 2010 No comments

How many times have you let your dog out and then spent hours trying to find him or her? A dog kennel could solve your problem. They come in various sizes to accommodate all breeds. This makes it ideal for yards that are compact or yards that have no fence to control your animals movements. You do not buy one size to fit all animals, but you can actually purchase your kennel to fit your furry friend’s needs. The enclosure gives you peace of mind when you let your pup out and it keeps him safe from getting hurt or wondering off.

A portable dog kennel gives you the option of taking it with you if you should have to move or relocate. It provides a quick and easy way to house your pet for emergencies and can save on boarding cost should the need arise. These enclosures allow pets to roam and exercise, in turn, your pet will show less stress or anxiety when they are allowed to move freely.

Dog supplies and indoor dog pen enclosures go hand in hand. If you do not know what kind of pen you want, it is best to shop around and take your time to make sure you get the one that will be best for your breed and will be just right for your living area. Many pens come with portable floors that can be easily cleaned or hosed off. Portable housing can be setup inside the pen, and roofs to protect your pet from the seasonal changes are available in soft and hard styles. Animals can adapt easily to these private surroundings and will love having their special place to stay. Outside enclosures are larger than the ones you use inside the home. The pens are made of different materials, so if your pup likes to chew on things you might want a metal pen instead of wood or plastic. It is important to keep your pets personality in mind when you purchase a dog kennel so that you can match the type and materials to your specific need.

  • Life Jackets For Dogs

Posted on February 4th, 2010 No comments

If you play around a lot of water or use, you must keep your dog safe. A life jacket for your dog can make your boating and days out walking near water more enjoyable. You can get on your boat and not worry as much about him falling overboard. If you play around any water source, you need not be constantly worrying about your dog. Dogs can be lively and difficult to manage at times, so if you are around any type of water you can keep your dog safe with a life jacket and reduce your level of worry. I decided to see what I could find out about the available dog life jackets.

I found the Outward Hound Dog Life Jacket for Dogs which sells for about $18.99. This jacket fits dogs with a size of chest 26 “-35″. This high performance life jacket is ideal for boating, water sports and outdoor activities. This life vest allows flotation and ultimate buoyancy with bright color for visibility. The design allows you to adjust the size quickly, and allows a perfect fit. Waterproof neoprene gives warmth and protection. It  is available in 5 sizes to fit most dogs. Looks like a good life jacket for dogs, and I think the adjustable feature is good.

I found the little Life Jacket for dogs sells for around $15.99.  They have neon nylon double yellow reflective strips that provide additional visibility. There have large and extra strong Velcro straps with quick release locking clips to keep the jacket securely fastened. There is a Quick Pick-up handle that makes it easier to rescue your dog and lift him out of the water. I like the fact that this life jacket has a handle to lift the dog out of water. I think it is a valuable contribution to the mesh design.

Last but not least, I found the designer dog Life Jacket Nauti Dog, which sells for approximately $24.99. It provides the ultimate in buoyancy and high visibility. It has an advanced breathable mesh under the belly to give proper drainage and drying. It has adjustable straps and a fastening system with a quick release. If you are interested in unique jackets and rescue devices,  you can find much more on the internet if you search.

  • Resource For Natural Pet Health Care

Posted on July 3rd, 2009 No comments

There are a lot of reasons people turn to natural health care for their pets. For some it’s because they believe in natural health care and prevention for themselves so they have incorporated it into their pet’s life as well. For others it’s because of a pet’s chronic illness or illnesses that weren’t helped by traditional pet care.

Whatever your reason for wanting to learn more about natural health care for your pets you’ll likely want to get a copy of Dr. Pitcairn’s Complete Guide to Natural Health For Dogs & Cats by Dr. Richard Pitcairn and his wife Susan Hubble Pitcairn.

Dr. Pitcairn is a veterinarian, graduated in 1965, who wasn’t satisfied with the results he received from his training. After years of learning, going back to school and experience he has incorporated valuable new techniques into his practice and teaches these to other vets. But for the layman his book is one of the most comprehensive resource guides I have seen on natural pet health care, and knowing it comes from a trained veterinarian is a bonus for me. It’s the best of both worlds.

  • Identify A Dog Allergy Quickly

Posted on June 28th, 2009 No comments

Even though you expect a dog to do a certain amount of scratching it sometimes becomes noticeable that the itching has extended way beyond the normal. What your dog may be suffering from is a dog allergy, picked up either from the surrounding environment or perhaps from the food that it eats.

It is important for the comfort of your dog to identify that there is a problem first and then to take the appropriate action. That may be to note down as much about your dog’s condition before taking it to the vet for a more definitive assessment of what might be wrong.

There are many distinguishing symptoms such as excessive scratching, ear irritation, head shaking and anal rubbing. Don’t leave it until your dog has rubbed all of the fur off its back before you decide that there is a problem.

  • Cat People

Posted on June 12th, 2009 No comments

11What makes someone a cat person. Well, besides the fact that they prefer cats over dogs. What are the qualities that kittens have the would make a person choose them over a puppy. People who decide to buy that cute kitten and leave the puppy behind probably are busier and prefer the fact that cats require much less care than dogs. In my experience dogs are a bit more affectionate than cats, they tend to be more playful and less independent. You never have to walk your cat late at night, that’s what the litter box is for. You can always choose to let your cat roam freely outside, in which case they will need even less care. An outdoor cat can disappear for days at a time. So I believe that kitten people want a pet that allows them a certain kind of freedom that they might loose taking care of a puppy. This of course excludes the neighborhood crazy cat lady.

  • Sports Bags

Instead of the cat in the hat, I have the cat in the sports bag. I like to take my calico named Jasper with me when I travel instead of leaving him at the vet or other boarding facility. I just couldn’t do that to poor Jasper.

On my last vacation I went on a road trip with a couple of friends and we went camping at the beach. The trip was a ton of fun but the travel time needed to get to the coast was just over three hours. This was a little hard on Jasper and he didn’t want to be left in the car when we stopped for lunch. I didn’t bring a leash or other carry bag so I came up with a cool idea. I emptied one of my sports bags and used it to bring Jasper into the restaurant with me. I don’t think anyone at the dinner knew except for the kids at the table next to us. It worked for Jasper and it worked for me.
