With Halloween just around the corner, now’s the perfect time to start planning the year’s scariest party. This Halloween trivia can be used for games, contests, costume ideas, and conversation starters all season long.

    • Halloween has been celebrated for more than 2000 years. It was first known as All Hallows Eve, the day that early Celtics believed marked the time period that the spirits of their decease loved ones returned to Earth.
    • The first jack-o-lanterns were designed to keep these spirits at bay. They were originally made of turnips, a common vegetable that was easily accessible in Europe. But after the tradition spread to America, early settlers switched to pumpkins, an indigenous plant that was more readily accessible.
    • Last year, $5.77 billion dollars was spent on the celebration of Halloween. The most popular adult’s costume was the witch, and the most popular child’s costume was the prince/princess. While miniature chocolate bars have long been a staple in trick-or treat giveaways, 2008’s most commonly handed out was the Snickers.
    • Samhainophobia is the fear of Halloween.
