  • Home Decorating Business – What Is It With Large In Home Decorating?

With so many things in home design and decorating there is a tendency to follow trends.  To be fair, this is not something peculiar to home decorating but can be found in most any social aspects to life.  Books have been written around these topics of what makes people follow some particular trend or fad.  It is quite interesting reading.  When it relates to interior decorating, there is a similar phenomenon.  Throughout time, there have always been ways to be acknowledged as the ‘upper class’ in terms of material possessions.  Today is no different.

What seems to be a trend over the past few years relates not so much to the particular objects in the home, but the size of those objects.  It is similar to men’s watches.  The face of a man’s watch is often a status symbol.  The size marks some distinction for the owner.  The same is true with large wall clocks.  Do you need a four-foot diameter clock to tell time?  No, of course you don’t.  However, it might be more proportionately appropriate for your walls and also makes that same statement.  Now, while there is not necessarily any status overtly associated with having large mirrors in your home, it is nevertheless a sign of wealth.  It speaks to the overall size of the home.

This is just as true with the floor space in your home.  There was a time when smaller homes were much more the norm.  Whole families were raised in 800-1,000 square foot or smaller homes.  Now, the trend is to go bigger and bigger.  While there is a ‘small home movement’ happening, the population at large, pardon the pun, in the United States prefers a larger and more open floor plan.  So, it should come as no surprise that large area rugs are needed on those grand wood or tile floors.  If bigger is better, then the newer home designs are the best.

Even newer design techniques like many home decorating software programs seem to support the “large” decorating style. When doing your own home decorating, wallpaper choices can have an big influence on how large or small a room can feel.

If you run your own home decorating company, you certainly need to stay on top of current trends, but don’t be afraid to create and stick with your own home decorating style.
