Men’s Hiking Shorts Make for a Cooler Hike
Hiking shorts are an excellent way to achieve style and comfort on the trail. The style you choose depends widely on personal preference as well as functional need. There are many styles ranging from cargo with a multitude of pocket space and length, to short shorts which for some may be more comfortable and allow greater range of movement. Cargo style offers length and more protection from the elements. Being able to move comfortably enough to step up and over obstacles is a consideration whichever style you may choose. Other features may be key clips, removable belts and uniquely sized pockets. All are a matter of your individual taste and needs.
A very wide range of fabric material is also available, a breathable fabric that cannot be easily torn is a good idea. There are a wide variety of fabrics to choose from ranging from cotton to canvas to tent type material. Look for features such as “wicks away moisture” , “breathable” and “quick drying”. If you would like to see wildlife while out exploring it is also a good idea to not purchase shorts with a fabric that either “swishes” or “crinkles” with each step. However, if not seeing wildlife is your goal, noisy fabric is an option.
If you decide upon cargo style it is good to remember not to overload your pockets, as this can be a real “drag”. Some find they don’t really need a whole lot of pocket space or length and opt for short and streamlined. You want them to be loose, but not so loose that you are caught on every bramble you may pass. Make sure the waist fits properly and also a comfortable belt, not too thin and not too wide will help keep them in place as you explore. Some come with belts built in, in this case you may want to opt for a pair with a belt that can be removed.
In considering a pair, keep quality in mind. Hiking shorts are athletic equipment and as with all athletic equipment, quality is an important consideration. You want durability and should choose with this in mind. Be sure to try them on and test for your comfort. Some come with zippered pockets which can be quite handy. See if they are easy to walk in and if the fabric is kind to your skin, as many a walk has been ruined by chafing.
