Pike Fishing Tackle Must Match the Quarry
Posted on July 6th, 2010 No commentsThere are a couple of essential tools you absolutely must have when fishing for Pike. These are unlike any other fresh water game fish out there. They are incredibly strong, have long teeth up to an inch and ½ long, make long deep dives and are sure to give your arms a work out. To be successful you must match your Pike fishing tackle to the strengths of the fish. These fish are monsters and attack baits rather than simply bite them. The current world record is an astonishing 55 lb monster caught in Germany in 1986, and while there have been plenty of threats to the throne, this one remains the biggest confirmed Pike caught to date. So, what’s needed when going after this incredible freshwater game fish?
Pike Fishing Tackle: Heavy Tackle, Rod, Reel, and Line
When it comes to fishing for Pike, it’s an absolute must to have that heavy action rod. Typically the rod length should be about 7 to 8 feet in length, well made and durable. The reel should have a line capacity of 150 to 200 yards and able to spool up to 15 to 20 lb test line. The best pike fishermen can get away with 10 or 12 lb line and still catch the fish with the right drag setting, but it’s best to ensure you match the line’s weight with the rod and lure you’re fishing with.
Wire Leaders and Stainless Steel Protective Gloves are a Must
Because so much of the Pike’s allure is its ability to thrash and make long runs, wire leaders are an absolute must. Pike have extremely long teeth that can easily tear apart even the heaviest of lines. Once you finally land that monster, make sure to have a good set of stainless steel protective gloves. Many fishermen have been bit by a Pike simply not willing to give up long after they’re in the boat or on shore.
Spoons, Deep-Diving Crankbaits, and Imitation Minnows for Bait
Perhaps the two most recognized Pike lures in the world are the Red-Devil and Five of Diamonds Spoons and they are both highly recommended by outdooradventuresguide.com. However, equally effective are deep-diving crank-baits, and world renowned minnow imitations like the Rapala minnow. Other popular baits include large spinners by Mepps & Blue Fox.
When it comes to fishing for monster Pike, success is all about matching your Pike fishing tackle to fish’s strengths. These are big fish with even bigger appetites, so don’t be afraid to use large lures.
