How To Care of Your Shag Area Rugs

A shag area rug can be a beautiful addition to your home. They may be a small shag area rug or the entire area of your room, either way they are sure to add a certain charm all their own. However, many people are put off by a shag rug because they are a bit harder to clean than most other rugs. Shag rugs need more care than other types of rugs because of their pile. To properly care for a shag area rug follow these steps:

First, vacuum your shag rug regularly. At least twice a week, however you may need to do it more depending upon the traffic you get through your house.

Second, If it is only an area rug you have, you can sweep it with a bristle type broom. The bristles will get down into the pile and help push out the dirt.

Third, you can use what is called the paddle method. This is of course used only with an area rug. You simply roll up your rug, take it out doors, throw it over a clothes line, then use a paddle to knock the dirt out of the rug. You could also use this opportunity to spray it down with a carpet freshener.

For larger rugs you will need to either rent a carpet shampooer, or more economically purchase a carpet shampooer. Shampoo your rugs at least once every six months. For more high traffic areas you may want to shampoo more frequently. If you do not wish to buy one you could rent one from your local supermarket, or you could hire a professional service, just look under the yellow pages under carpet cleaning. Or find one online is another option as well.

If you completely stick to these steps, you should have no trouble keeping your shag area rugs in the best shape possible.
