Sunless tanning has grown in popularity in recent years, and is seen as a safe alternative to traditional tanning. Many methods are used, but one of the most popular methods is spray tanning. While this is usually done in a salon, various cosmetic companies have released their own version of a “tan in a can” as a great addition to the many sunless tanning spray products.

The active ingredient in these sprays is dihydroxyacetone, also known as DHA. The tan is achieved due to a chemical reaction between the DHA and amino acids that that are in the dead layer of the skin’s surface. The tan is not permanent, and will usually fade in three to ten days. It is advisable to test the product on a small patch of skin twenty-four hours before applying the product on your entire body. This is because DHA may cause contact dermatitis, an allergic reaction on the skin. DHA is approved by the FDA for use on the skin, and is even recommended as a cosmetic cover for patients.

Spray tanning booths are popping up in salons all over the United States, and usually aren’t that hard to find. Each salon usually has several different types of tanning sprays to choose from. Because everyone’s skin is different, the same spray may give one customer a light, natural looking tan, while it may turn a different customer bright orange! Ask about the different sprays available at the salon before application. The booths usually resemble a large, enclosed shower stall. While some spas use an automated system, others have knowledgeable staff that manually airbrush the spray onto your skin. It is a good idea to make sure the booth you are using has proper ventilation and offers protective goggles for your eyes.

If you don’t wish to spend big bucks on repeated trips to the salon, there are a number of at-home sprays to try. Sally Henson Cosmetics has released a spray tan that promises even coverage. Bahama Bronze has also released a canned tanning spray. There are also many companies who distribute airbrush tanning systems. There is even a product that promises to turn your shower into a tanning booth. Most of these products can be found at local retail stores. When using these products, proceed with caution. You may need to try out a few before finding the product that gives you the desired result.
