  • How to Get Alcoholism Detox

Posted on February 13th, 2010 No comments

What is the best way to go about getting the alcoholism detox that you need in order to quit drinking and change your life?  The best way to go through alcohol detox is to go to a drug or alcohol treatment center.  If you are coming off of alcohol and you are starting to shake badly then you should even consider going to a hospital or an emergency room if you cannot get into a treatment center, as this condition can be quite dangerous.  But ultimately you want alcohol detoxification to occur in a rehab setting, and there are several reasons for this.

One reason that detox makes sense in a rehab setting is because of their level of specialization. They are better equipped to handle alcohol withdrawal than other medical facilities, and it is likely that they have a doctor or they consult with one who specializes in addiction treatment.  Thus your level of care will be greater than if you just go to a hospital or something.

Second of all you can benefit greatly from the residential program that they have in a treatment center, and most who go through detox there will also attend the residential portion as well.  It is here that you can learn about how to live a sober life and start learning the tools that will help you to deal with life and not use drugs or alcohol to self medicate with.

Third of all you will get a whole lot of extra support in an inpatient setting from the peers that you are in treatment with.  This is important because most alcoholics will find that they cannot do it alone, and that they need help in order to change their life on such a massive scale.  Getting help and support from your peers in recovery is one big way to make this change occur much easier than if you are going it alone.

  • Can I Detox From Alcohol At Home?

The problem with attempting to Alcohol Detox At Home is whether you are fit enough to do it.

What I mean is that if you are at risk from the withdrawal symptoms of your alcohol problem then you are probably not a good candidate for Alcohol Detox At Home.

If you have consulted a physician and you will be getting some medical support then there are some things that you need to do if you are going to attempt Alcohol Detoxification at home.

You will need to make yourself as comfortable as you possibly can. This means having enough food and liquid, warm blankets and clothing, a few books or magazines as well keep away the boredom.  I know this sounds kind of stupid but you will get moments of boredom, even during Detox From Alcohol.

Another thing to make sure you have is some simple medications from your nurse or pharmacy, to make sure that you can cope with the symptoms such as nausea, headaches, and diarrhea.
