  • Green Garage Doors

Most folk are aware of those aspects of modern life traditionally associated with Green issues. But look outside the box and it’s surprising how much else is, when it comes down to it, a Green issue. Consider for example garage doors.

Huh? How can someone’s garage doors possibly be even remotely a Green issue? Well, as it happens there are two good reasons, namely manufacturing and disposal. Garage doors may come in all manner of styles but are made from only a small range of materials: metal, wood and synthetic.

Metal garage doors are constructed using sheet metal, which had to be first mined as ore, transported to a smelting plant, rolled flat and transported to a factory to be turned into doors. That’s an awful lot of energy and raw materials, though at least metal is recyclable.

Synthetic garage doors are typically made from moulded fibre-glass or vinyl – factories, transport and energy again, with the extra bonus of nasty chemicals and an end product that sits a long way towards the wrong end of the recycling spectrum.

Which leaves wood garage doors. These are sourced direct from trees – an all natural product that requires no manufacturing as such – simple cut to shape – and can be easily recycled. Not only that, but as this wooden garage doors guide points out, wooden doors are way nicer to look at and may even increase the value of your home too.
