Is It Okay For Men To Wear Hoop Earrings?
Posted on July 23rd, 2010 No commentsA very popular style of jewelry these days is hoop earrings, which can be worn by men as well as women, whatever some of the older generation might think about it! The men’s ones are just a little more discreet, and usually smaller than the ones worn by the girls. Hoop earrings, as the name implies, are circular, and normally they completely encircle the wearer’s earlobes, attaching right through the lobe itself. Some variations do not close the hoop by piercing through the lobe, but instead dangle, attached somewhat like a stud earring; these ones may be completely circular, but more often this dangling variety is open.
The range of hoops you can get for women is enormous, starting with plain precious metal ones in sterling silver, or gold or even platinum. If you want to buy hoop earrings for a special occasion, you might want to consider diamond ones, or if you are on a tight budget, simply ditch the diamond idea and opt for cubic zirconia instead. The next consideration is size; there are all sorts from the tiny more formal hoops to fun and crazy giant ones that’ll get you noticed. So if you’re a girl on a mission, shopping for this style of earrings, you might be away for quite a while!
The mens earrings were always smaller and less showy than those worn by women, and generally they were plain in design, and made from a single metal, normally yellow gold or sterling silver. Of course, men’s hoop earrings are never the dangle variety, but go straight through the earlobe. The good news is that the simple and straightforward designs began to give way to more outlandish styles as the male celebrities got snapped by photographers wearing diamond embedded earrings, and the hoop earring became a status symbol for young men overnight.
For men, it is often the “rebel within” which makes them want to wear earrings, and this is best seen in the examples of many of the youth subcultures, such as the punks and the goths. It is the non-conformity that appeals to them. So it is not always necessary to go for something glitzy; a rugged hoop made of an unusual jewelry material such as polished steel is also a good choice.
There is one certainty though now we are into the 21st century. Men can certainly wear earrings just as readily as the girls, and most of the time, they won’t attract so much as a second glance.
