Termites like to stay in the ground or in the wood they are eating. The do not like to be exposed and open.  When they leave the colony to scavenge for food they prefer to find wood that is in direct contact with the ground.  That allows them to start eating the wood without being exposed.  If they do find a wood source away from the ground, they will build termite mud tubes to cover the open distance to get to the wood.

Termite tubes should be considered a serious sign of termites!  Breaking the tubes will quickly tell you if there is current termite activity in the tube.  If it is an active tube you will find workers going back and forth.  Termite soldiers will also quickly show up to defend the break while the termite workers work to repair the damage.

These tunnels generally apear along the foundation of buildings in corners or over cracks.  Watching for these will let you know right away if there is termite activity around.
