The Geo Tracker Four Wheel Drive SUV

The Geo Tracker SUV four wheel drive utility vehicle was produced in Canada by General Motors for the USA market. This rugged little four wheel drive car is the twin of the Suzuki Sidekick which was built out of the same factory.

The Tracker featured a 1.6 liter four cylinder engine at the beginning of it's production run in 1989 which produced 80 horse power. In the beginning the car was produced in three models. A base convertible, a 2 door, and the LSI hardtop models. The top of the line LSI featured air conditioner, chrome rally wheels, tinted glass, bucket seats, and a 3 speed automatic transmission. In 1990, the LSI trim package was included for the convertible models.

All the Tracker models were four wheel drive until 1992 when the two wheel drive convertible model was brought out. The original Tracker production ended with the 1995 model year when the line was revised to the second generation of vehicles, a four door hard top wagon. In 1996, the 1.6 liter, 120 horse power engine was featured. Production of the Tracker ended in 1998 when the marque was merged into the Chevrolet product line as the Vitara.

The Tracker was built on a solid light truck chassis with the light truck engine and high - low transfer case. The strong suspension, sturdy light truck frame and components gave the tracker a good off road capability and the vehicle is still popular today with the off road crowd.

The light vehicle weight and efficient engine gave very good fuel economy for a four wheel drive car with the 5 speed version delivering over 25 miles per gallon when cruising the highway. The automatic 3 speed transmission was not quite as efficient.

The Geo Tracker parts for repair are available through the Chevrolet dealer network as well as many independent auto parts dealers both on and off line. The standard maintenance items are most commonly the automatic transmission and engine systems.
