Using Decorative Pillows
Posted on June 2nd, 2010 No commentsDecorative pillows are an inexpensive way to add color and style to an otherwise uninspiring room. Pillows are versatile because they come in a wide variety of colors and patterns and can tie together colors in a room. Used properly, decorative pillows can create any effect you want. From shabby chic to ultra modern, the possibilities are endless.
When choosing decorative pillows, choose colors and patterns carefully. If your sofa is a solid color, then choose a patterned pillow. Try not to mix patterns. Plaids and floral-patterns work well for a country style, while geometric designs add flair to a contemporary room. For a traditional style, try using rich browns and deep greens. Tapestry designs can create an exotic feel, and lace works wonderfully for a shabby chic look. You can create a polished look by choosing pillows that contain the colors of both the walls and furniture in a room. If your walls are yellow and your sofa is blue, a nice gingham pillow with those colors in it can create a cozy, cottage feeling.
Don’t feel limited in your use of pillows for decorating. While they add a luxurious feeling to beds and can tie colors together in a living room or family room, they can also be used to frame a window seat in a kitchen or dining room. Adding a brightly patterned pillow to a sunny breakfast nook can create a very inviting look. You can even use weatherproof pillows on patio furniture.
You can buy pillows almost anywhere. Most major department stores carry them, and thrift shops are a great source for unusual, quirky patterns. If you can use a sewing machine, you can even make them yourself. When you are on a budget and need a quick update to your décor, using pillows can be an easy, creative, and fun way to add a personal touch to any room in the house.
