What Makes GPS Car Tracking Work?
Posted on August 28th, 2009 No commentsThe basic principles that you need to understand how GPS car tracking works comes from the field of geometry. The principle has a name and it is called trilateration. How it works is like this, if you know the location of three or more objects and you also know your distance from all those objects you can also know exactly where you are at at the present moment. It is really simple if you think about it, but it can get significantly more complex when we start talking about GPS tracking.
You see, GPS tracking involves satellites that sit in orbit over the earth. The are the objects that we know where they are located from the definition above. They send out a radio signal which contains some important information, like the time that the transmission was sent. Once a GPS car tracking device receives the signal it then calculates its distance from the know object (the satellite) by multiplying the speed of the signal by the amount of time it took to reach the receiver.
It is in this way that the GPS knows exactly where you are in the world and track things like your car.
